Portugal is a country that has been on the tourist map for many years but unlike many countries that have had a tourist industry for any great length of time it still has many resorts that are relatively untouched by the tourist industry in a bad way. With only a little bit of research it is possible to find a beautifully secluded resort that will have the feel of Portugal from many years ago. This is the beauty of Portugal, a very small country that attracts so many tourists back year after year. For this reason Portugal is seen by many as one of the jewels in Europe's tourism crown, with its wonderfully appealing all year round climate as well as its gorgeous fine sandy beaches and crystal clear waters and picturesque fishing villages with narrow streets and white washed houses.

Portugal is larger than Great Britain but has a much smaller population, just over 10 million people as opposed to 60 million in Great Britain. This makes it very easy to find peace a quiet when on vacation in Portugal, although if you do prefer your vacations with a little more action you can still find resorts which have a nightlife.

Portugal is very much a coastal country with over 800 kilometers of coastline and a tradition founded on fishing, it is still very easy to go for a drive along the coast and stumble upon an unspoilt Portuguese fishing village. If you are lucky enough to find one of these villages it is as near as you will ever get to taking a step back in time to a time before the commercial world that we live in took root. Portugal is situated on the Atlantic Ocean with Spain to the north and mainland Africa to the south. The Atlantic Ocean can be a little rough but is generally pretty safe for bathing in as long as caution is taken when in the sea.

As well as the traditional fishing villages that you will find along the coast of Portugal you will also find the major cities of Lisbon and Porto which are both steeped in history, Porto being the home of the drink Port which is world renowned and has been made there for hundreds of years in the same way. Both of these cities are well worth a visit if you are in the area as they make for a great diversion from simply sitting on the beach.

By far and away the most popular destination for tourists when visiting Portugal is the Algarve which is a region in the south of the country and is home to many of the countries finest beaches and calmest waters. The Algarve has been attracting families and tourist for many years and although certain parts of the Algarve are a bit livelier than some people would like it is still possible to find some beautiful resorts such as Albufeira.

Because of its location Albufeira has nearly all year round sun and a fantastically inviting climate to families, tourists and golfers who come to the region in their thousands to enjoy some of the splendid golf courses and facilities that the region has to offer. The golfing industry is booming in the Albufeira region and there are many courses that are suitable for all levels of experience.

Portugal, the Algarve and Albufeira are accessed easily from most major European airports with most tourist flights landing at Faro on the Algarve which is within easy reach of most of the tourist resorts. So if you are looking for a vacation this year and you want to experience somewhere that has all of the facilities of the over developed resorts that have been spoiled by over commercialization but is still in touch with it's roots and traditions then why not visit Albufeira on the Algarve.
