A Dream about Who We Are, Part 1

According to Toltec belief, we are dreamers. Our ancestors created a big dream that is a collection of billions of personal dreams. This dream includes all of society's rules, beliefs, religions, laws, cultures etc. We have been taught what to believe by our parents and our society. We learn to believe in a collective dream we never chose. This is a dream that is controlled by fear and violence. It is a dream of war and injustice. Don Miguel Ruiz, in his book "The Four Agreements" points out that 95% of the beliefs we have in our mind are simply lies. These lies blind us to the truth that is all around us.

He points out something very interesting. Often our biggest fear is not that of being a failure, but that of being a success. We are afraid to express ourselves, and then be rejected by other people once they know who we are. We wear a mask and, as much as we want other people to know who we really are, we are afraid that once they find out then they will laugh, and that their laugh will kill us. We want to be perfectly acceptable to everyone. We try to please the people who are important to us and even ones who are strangers; and we end up pleasing nobody, and certainly not ourselves. We are even afraid that other people will expect us to continually be a success and we will not be able to keep it up. At some point, somehow we will make a mistake, and other people will laugh at us and reject us. We are so afraid of making a mistake that we don't learn from them.

We learn, very early on, that we are not good enough because we can never always live up to the dream of society about who we should be. We can only be ourselves, and that is never good enough for society's dream. We judge ourselves more harshly than anyone else does. We often allow other people to abuse us because we believe a lie that "I deserve this. I'm not worthy of love and respect. I'm not good enough." We think we should be perfect. We have rejected ourselves because we have an image in our minds of what it means to be perfect that we can never measure up to.

According to Don Miguel Ruiz, your concept of who you are, your personality, is a collection of agreements you have made with yourself and others. He says "Each one of us is born with a certain amount of personal power that we rebuild every day after we rest. Unfortunately, we spend all of our personal power first to create all these agreements and then to keep these agreements. Our personal power is dissipated by all the agreements we have created, and the result is that we feel powerless. We have just enough power to survive each day, because most of it is used to keep the agreements that trap us in the dream of the planet. How can we change the entire dream of our life when we have no power to change even the smallest agreement?" Stay tuned for what new agreements you can make with yourself in order to change the dream of your life.
