Are you looking to build your own bookcase and want some good bookcase woodworking plans? It is a lot simpler than most think to make your own furniture when you have the step by step instructions that include the details and tips required for a successful project.

Below are the basic steps to making the perfect book shelf for your home.

1. Get good bookcase woodworking plans

It all starts with a good plan. Sure, there are a lot of craftsmen out there who can look at a individual bookcase and put together a material and hardware list and just go to town getting it built. For myself I require a plan, one with the material and hardware lists already put together; I don't want to cause all the brain damage trying to figure that stuff out going to the store over and over again.

2. build the case

Building the case is pretty uncomplicated, it is essentially an open faced box. Where you need to pay attention is to the joinery. You could go high end with dove tails or use a block and nail system. The dove tails are better but the block system, done right, can last forever.

3. construct the doors/ drawers/ shelves.

Doors, drawers, and shelves are what is going to make your bookcase stand out and give you the overall look you want. Here is another example of where having good bookcase woodworking plans will really benefit you. The shelves are easy, but building doors and drawers/ drawer boxes takes some thought. One thing you need to consider is the hardware, do you want full extension drawer glides, are the door hinges going to be seen or hidden? With the shelves, do you want them fixed or changeable?

Of course this goes back to the design and the plan. Trying to figure this stuff out in the field can result in a bunch of stops and starts and re-designing in the field which could ultimately provide a shoddy bookcase.

4. On to the base and top

Now that the body is made it is time to give your bookcase some real flavor with the top and the base. These are assembled separately and when done the body sets on the base and then the top is fastened.

Some things to think about when choosing one of the many designs provided from your bookcase woodworking plans is what over style do you want the feet to be? How much reveal and what details on the top? How these pieces are fastened to the main body is in fact important also.

5. Finish and Enjoy

Finishing is of course super imperative. Are you going to stain or just apply a clear coat? Maybe you are going to paint it. Regardless of what finish you choose it needs to be applied correctly or the piece will be ruined.

Remember, a good set of bookcase woodworking plans will cover all these and give all the tips, practices, methods, and tricks you want to make the ideal bookcase.
