At first glance, an Affiliate Marketing business can look like the ticket to instant wealth for next to zero effort. "FABULOUS!" you think, "All I need to do is spend 30 minutes each day, click on a few links and the money will come rolling in."
I wish this REALLY was the case. If it was, I would have a fleet of Lamborghinis and Ferraris parked at each of my houses in every exotic location on the globe. Sadly, the reality is far different from the picture painted by the internet marketing "gurus".
I am definitely NOT suggesting that affiliate marketing is a BAD thing. I think it is a great idea. In fact, I KNOW it is a great idea! Over the past couple of years, my own affiliate marketing efforts have becoming a solid earner for me. If I seem to be contradicting myself here, my point is that my success has not happened overnight.
By the way; “success” to me is choosing to work when and where I like and having total flexibility in my hours, while earning a substantial, and growing, income.
You need to realize up-front that affiliate marketing, like any business, will take EFFORT, it will require you to be ORGANIZED, it will take TIME, and it will be an easier road for you if you can afford to put at least a little MONEY into it. If you go into your affiliate business with these points in mind, you have a far better chance of making a success of your new venture.
Let us look at each of these points in turn.
1. EFFORT: You will not get anything in life without some sort of effort. Call it dedication, or enthusiasm, or drive if you like. Whatever term you use, ANY venture will be a flop without it. If you do not thrive on putting all your energy into a project, do not even THINK about a career in affiliate marketing!
2. ORGANIZATION: Affiliate marketing requires that you be organized - incredibly organized! If you do not take the time to set up some sort of filing system, you very soon will get hopelessly confused.
The more confused you become, the more likely you are to buy products that promise an easy solution. In a lot of cases, the simple process of checking-out a "fantastic" Free lead-generating product can become so confusing that, by the end of the process, you are no longer sure what you initially asked for.
Many of the sites have pages so long that you cannot possibly absorb all the information in one sitting. Each time you click a link you seem to be sinking in a sea of pop-ups, pop-unders, fly-ins, etc, all offering a different "once-only" extra special enhancement to the Free item you started off agreeing to.
You start opening new e-mail accounts – in no time at all you find you have a dozen of them, you have joined twenty or so "fabulous" lead generating systems and you have no idea what you are supposed to do with them.
Believe me; you need to set up your work plan BEFORE you start joining ANY of those lead-generating programs.
3. TIME: The hype tells you the opportunity you are about to join, will take JUST thirty minutes at most for you to be set-up for a lifetime income! You have spent a day or more already just trying to work out what is really involved. Face it; making vast sums of money is NOT something you can do in just thirty minutes.
You must make the decision up-front that you WILL dedicate a reasonable amount time each day or so, to building your business. Go into it with the expectation of working on it consistently, developing it over a period of time, and you will have a much better chance of building something that REALLY does make you a worthwhile income.
4. MONEY: You do NOT need to throw lots of money into an affiliate business to make a success of it. That is the beauty of this type of business; it allows the “little guy” to develop something big.
It can help if you are in a position to set aside a small amount of "seed" money to get things off the ground though. It can be what it takes to make the initial breakthrough which boosts your enthusiasm, making it easier to stick with your plan. However, beware of using your money to buy every "sure-fire", "secret" marketing system or e-book you come across. That is NOT a good use of your seed money.
That is enough for today. I will write further articles soon, to help keep you on track with your affiliate marketing endeavours. In the meantime, you might like to read what Tissa Godavitarne has to say on the subject. Rest assured, it is a short page and you will not find any pop-ups to annoy you.
