Experts suggest that in order to have a properly functioning system, an average person needs to have about seven to eight hours of quality sleep, meaning it is far from interruption or not cut short. The quality of the sleep has the same importance as its quantity, and these two will greatly affect how a person performs, especially on mental tasks, the following day. Lack of sleep can also affect our physical appearance. Someone who stayed awake last night can get eye bags, and perhaps pimples.

Aside from affecting the physical appearance, a person who is deprived with an appropriate amount of quality sleep is also deprived of the energy needed to function for a whole day's work. It can lead to short-term problems such as headaches, nausea, and dizziness. This may possibly lead to being cranky and clumsy at work and not able to focus in finishing tasks.

Sleep deprivation can also result in more serious problems like insomnia, obesity, and even psychosis. New studies have shown that continuous deprivation of sleep may lead to mental impairment, and consequently to psychosis.

Several factors can affect a person's sleep and these factors vary for every individual. Some individuals can not sleep because of noise, while some are not comfortable sleeping when lights are on. The human body releases melatonin, a naturally-occurring hormone which regulates sleep, to help the body relax and sleep. The amount of melatonin released depends on the environment. Exposure to light causes melatonin production to significantly drop and a darker environment causes the body to release more, thus allowing the body to relax and, eventually, sleep.

So, if a person is sensitive to light, what are his or her choices to attain a quality sleep?

The most convenient solution to this particular concern is wearing sleep masks. Sleep masks are helpful to people who are sensitive to light. It serves as a tool that permits users to control the light regardless of the situation. Ever wonder why most airlines provide sleep masks for their passengers? This is due to the reality that in traveling, light conditions are much harder to control.

Another thing to consider is having a cool design. Either it has your favorite superhero, or superheroes (in case you are a fan of The Justice League), or your favorite rock band. There also those which have plain colors. Also, making your own design is an excellent idea.

Remember that sleeping is not an excuse to not look good. Some occasions require sleepovers and you do not want your friends to see you wearing an old, unflattering airline sleep mask. But always keep in mind that the real purpose of sleep masks is to aid in your sleep so always prioritize comfort.
