Directory submission is the easiest way to get backlinks. Many websites offer free directory list. After you have found a directory list, you can start submitting your website to different directories. The directory list may contain invalid link to directories that don’t exist anymore so you have to sift them out. Some directories require you to register an account with them before you can submit your site.
Before submitting your site to the directories, make sure you read the submission guidelines. The submission guidelines contain a set of rules which you must follow in order for your site to get approved. By reading the submission guidelines, you will be able to increase chances of getting approved.
The title should be the title that you use on the homepage of the site. It should contain at least 1 keyword. Each directory has different requirement on the length of the title. Most directories has a word count underneath the title field. When you reach the limit, the word count will display 0.The description should describe the site in 1 – 4 sentences. It should not be too long. The description should have 40 – 60 words. Some directories require the description to have at least 100 words.
You have to use a valid email address for your directory submission. The email address should be based on the root of the domain which you are submitting to the directory. For example, if your site is xyz.com, the email address should be email@xyz.com. Some directories will accept email addresses that are registered from free email account provider. However, it is best that you don’t use free email address because it does not make your company look professional.
It is recommended that you only submit to the directories that have pagerank. You can submit to directories that have no pagerank. If you want to submit to the directories without pagerank, make sure you don’t submit to too many of them. The search engine will consider you as a spammer if it detect that most of the links are from directories that have page rank 0. The best practice is to submit to the directories that have pagerank 2 and above. You should not measure the value of the directory by the pagerank. It is not necessary for an authoritative directory to have a pagerank of 5 and above. Typically, a directory with a pagerank 3 is considered good.
Some free directories allow you to submit deep links in your website. Many webmasters ignore the deep links options. If the submission page has fields for the deep links, you should fill in the fields. In this way, you will be able to get backlinks for the internal pages in your site.
After you have submitted your site to the directories, you have to give the editors some time to review it. Your submission entry can get approved in as fast as 1 day. If the directory has a huge backlog, it will take a longer time for your entry to be reviewed and get listed. You may or may not be informed when the directory has approved your submission entry. You can check back the directory every now and then to see if your submission is already approved.
