There are many reasons why such a high percentage of American citizens choose to spend their money online instead of their nearest mall, Wal-Mart or other big-chain retailer. In my personal experience I have found that it is a lot more convenient than having to leave the house.
It is so simple, I can get off my bed when the thought of purchasing arises, search on one of the big 3 search engines; Google, Yahoo & Bing for what I am thinking of buying and within 5-10 minutes I can find a great price, simple customer service, no lines, searching for parking spots or the inconvenience of traffic and lights on the way home.
Some say that it is a bad thing because you cannot just pull the product through the screen but have to wait and pay for shipping as well. There are many online retailers that offer free shipping on the majority of their products with many of everyone's favourites. Many times the savings incurred through a sale or coupon makes up for any shipping charge associated to said purchase.
When shopping for the holidays, most tend to have to buy for many different people, genders and surely different personalities and tastes. Even at the local mall most are not able to locate everything they are looking for and have to visit multiple locations to complete their shopping needs. Online you are positively always able to find what you are looking for 24 hours a day.
Although the big retailers seem to be the obvious choice for shoppers online because of the brands they offer and the marketing done to keep them in your mind, there are thousands of websites owned by people just like yourself offering the same products, cheaper and with customer service only found when dealing with a real person and not an automated answering or ordering service. While the majority still choose to drive to their local retailer rather than shop online that does not mean the chance will disappear to try it out for the first time. With all of this I have written here there is no way I am saying that I will not take a ride to Best Buy for a computer monitor or Ikea for some cheap furniture. I will surely always do most of my shopping for big purchases online.
If safety and security are something that helps you feel better there are many, many places online that show their security certificates to help ease any doubts. The internet is still a dangerous place if not careful with how you browse online. All retailers in some way are covered through reviews and articles somewhere online. Make sure to search them out if in any way concerned. At the same time do not hesitate to report a website for improper sales tactics, content or solicitations of illegal services or products.
