When it comes to hot tub covers there is an ever-present battle against sun, rain and snow. Unfortunately the weather always wins this battle and hot tub covers will begin to show signs of wear.

Experienced hot tub owners have most likely purchased new hot tub covers, but if this is your very first hot tub you may not have been aware that your cover will need to be replaced. Veteran or rookie, this article will still be of help to you when it comes time to purchase that new hot tub cover.

The internet makes ordering a replacement hot tub cover easy. One of the most important things you will need to know is how to correctly measure your hot tub cover to make sure it fits right.

The following 5 tips will help you when it comes time to measure your hot tub cover:

1 - Measure twice, cut once…
Like most things that require a specific size it is best to take multiple measurements to ensure that you are getting the right shape. By taking more than one measurement you can compare to be certain that what you are providing to the hot tub cover company is correct. When you first take your measurements you can measure the old cover, but remember cover tend to shrink and warp over time so the ideal measurement will come from the hot tub itself.

2 - Give 'em an inch…
Most companies require that you provide your measurements in inches, but it's not a bad idea to note the metric measurements as well. One of the most important things to do when taking measurements is to round up, because having a cover that is an inch larger than the hot tub will still fit. A cover that is an inch too small will not.

3 - The third dimension…
A company can only make your hot tub cover if you provide all the dimensions; this includes the length, width and depth. Also make special note if you have a ledge around your hot tub.

4 - Larger than life…
If you have a custom-built hut tub, especially one that is large enough to accommodate many people at one time, it is advisable to check with the company to see if they can make a cover for you. Most companies can only make a cover that is no larger than 96 inches.

5 - Special considerations…
If your hot tub has a unique shape, one where a typical cover will need to be retrofitted with special flaps or cutouts you should also check with the company before hand. Most companies may not be able to accommodate this type of cover.

Finding out if other customers are happy with their replacement cover is a great way to know you will be dealing with a reputable company. Ask the company for references or just use the powers of the internet to find out more information. It's also a good idea to see if the company sells any other hot tub accessories. Remember, measure twice, and cut once. Or in this case measure twice, order once.
