Our sense of hearing is always taken for granted since most everyone believe it is something we are born with and will die with as well. The majority of people will lose their sense of hearing albeit slowly, as they age and their body breaksdown. It is of prime importance then to check out the causes and reasons that cause hearing disorders and how these could be treated.

Among babies, hearing loss is the most common birth defect as 3 in every 1,000 babies are said to have it. Not just adults, but even children and teens can get hearing loss. Just because a person is born normal, he or she can still get it from sustaining head injuries or a person's genetics.

One such example that is the most common cause of hearing loss is due to long term exposure to environmental noise. Airports, construction sites, concerts are all environments with very loud noises that can damage a person. Things like the use of guns, tools that emit very loud noises even if just for a burst of time are dangerous too.

Methods to treat hearing impairments is through the use of what is called hearing aids. There are a ton of different kinds of hearing aids used to treat problems with hearing and each of these have their own pros and cons. The main function of a hearing aid is to collect, funnel and amplify surrounding sound to a person.

Where the electro acoustic device is worn will determine the class of the hearing aid. Hearing aids worn behind the ear are called BTE and these are made up of a case, a tube and ear molds. The BTE is often prescribed by doctors because of its practicality, being a device worn outside the ear, free from damage caused by moisture and earwax.

Aside from the BTE, there is a new medical breakthrough called cochlear implants which is simply a device made to replace your cochlear. The device is implanted behind the ear of the person, under the scalp area. This inner working of this device basically collects, converts and transmits sounds from the surrounding into our brain through electrodes.

A tiny cochlear implant has many parts, some of which are the microphone, the speech processor, the transmitter, the converter and the electrodes. Cochlear implants are sadly, still very expensive, as it is still a very new technology that has not scaled yet. The price isn't the only thing that will stop a person, as the hearing history, health, gender and so forth are checked before one is qualified for it.

Doctor's and patients are also looking forward to gene therapy. Gene therapy allows anyone to regrow their damaged cochlea cells to ensure compatibility. While it may sound easy in writing, gene therapy is complex and is still being developed.

No one can say for sure when they will lose their sense of hearing, but the hearing treatments provided are a gist of what can be done in light of it. There are many types of hearing treatments available, and the only way to find out which one is for you is to find a doctor. Life isn't the same when you don't have your sense of hearing.
