Investment castings is a kind of casting process in which a liquid melted substance is poured into a mold and then allow it to take desired shapes after if coagulate you will get the specified product you wish and that harden part or the product will be known as the casting. In this you require to break the mold to bring out the product. This process is used with a lot of materials to make different kinds of products.

This is a process that is used for many different purposes but as general one can say that it is used to design such things that otherwise are difficult to make or are uneconomical. It is a very old subject and as old as 6000 years. Investment castings is one of the most elder types of casting among its different kinds and used to create different type of precision parts from the use of melted metals. Another name for that process is lost wax method.

The very first step in this process is to create a wax pattern which is exact replica of the product you desired to make from that of usually steel or some other metal. In the beginning of this process it is allowed to be encased in a ceramic material which is after the specified period removed by heat or any other process. Then you will proceed to the second step and poured into its opening the steel which will be in the melted form from and poured it from the opening left in the wax replica. Then allow it to be solidified after a specific period of time when you will make sure that the process of investment costing is complete and that your product will be ready. Then remove the mold by breaking it and the product will be obtained in the form of solid steel and finally the investment castings will be available for the final use.

The history behind the process of investment castings is very old and also very interesting to hear. It starts thousands of years back this process is originated from the honey bee’s wax which is used in early investment casting to bring the desired shapes and people then covered it with clay. Also people use coal and bellows to melt the metal and this process is followed to make different patterns in idols and jewelry and in producing the art items. As the time passed the technology increased and this process of investment casting also improved and now it’s become possible to produce identical products by investment casting.

The first profession which used the investment castings process was the dentists who used this process to make the fillings to be used in the mouth of the patients facing problems with their teeth. This is from where the industry starts using this process. Advancements have made many things possible by this process now this process can hold extremely high and tight dimensional properties. These are as precise as few thousands of and inch per inch. In this way it is made possible that one can use investment castings products without further machining.
