Cat owners are often under the impression that there cat is simply too moody to respond. Some owners feel that their Kitty is untrainable simply because they are so independent. Pets frequently fail to obey their owners simply because they fail to understand what it is you want from them. If you have tried unsucessfully to train your cat, you may not be doing it right.
Good Kitty:
Training your cat takes time and patience. It requires more of this than it does with a dog. A sure way to achieve results is to use positive reinforcement. Whatever you do, don’t scold your cat because she is likely to just misbehave when you aren’t looking. Instead, praise positive and good behaviour. Any cat is able to learn. Try to commence when your cat is young about eight to ten weeks. But, the pet will do well at any age.
How do you get started?
The first thing to start with is training your cat to come when called. Hold a cat's treat and simply call his name. You'll want to make sure your kitty is in a good mood. Try to make sure that there isn't a great deal of noise. Distractions will only slow down tha cat or befuddle him. Decide on a one direction and use it soley. The command should be short and easy to say. For example, come kitty works well or here kitty will work too. Where possible get down on their level by sitting, kneeling or lying on the floor next to them. Verbalise the command. Please make sure that your tone is happy and excited. When your cat responds to you, reward him with praise and a treat. Also, insure that you praise the cat as well. Move way and repeat the same thing again. The goal is to use the same tone of voice and the same command. Work on it for no longer than ten minutes. If your cat is showing signs of boredom or frustration it is time to stop. Repeat this two to three times a day for approximately a week. Once he gets this command, you can move on to others.
There are many things that your cat needs to learn for his own well being are needed to teach all cats. For example, your cat needs to learn to tolerate a harness and a lead in case you are required to travel with him. Furthermore, your cat should learn to use a carry box.
What about a harness and leash?:
To do this, you’ll want to start by putting the harness on him. Do not restrain your cat once it is place. Praise him for it. Reward your kitty with a treat for responding so well. When he is used to wearing it, attach the leash to it and simply let him lead you throughout the area. Coax your cat into following you by using praise and treats. Some cats may even learn to heel on a lead. But, most won't. They should learn not to panic or struggle whilst wearing the leash.
A Carry Crate:
When it comes to the crate, it can be done a little simpler. Cats enjoy warm safe places so ensure you put a comfortable blanket and maybe even a toy inside the crate. Shower praise when you place him in it. Then, leave him there for a few minutes. Ensure you let him out within three to five minutes. Try not to offer him praise when he leaves the crate because you do not want him to think this is the good behaviour. Make sure to reward him, though whenever he goes in. Leave the cat in the crate slightly longer each time. It will result in your cat being trained well enough to keep him there.
I hope these simple tips will show you how useful it can be to give your cat a little discipline.
