South Africa is blessed with a broad collection of cuisines. South African culture is rich and diverse and that is perhaps embodied in their wide array of cuisines. The land itself is excellent for plants and the optimum climate and sunshine helps them flourish.

South Africa is called the "Rainbow Nation", a term coined by Desmond Tutu, the Archbishop and then adopted by the President Nelson Mandela, that smybolizes the range of the country's culture and people. This range is also reflected on South African cuisine, which contains cookery practised by original people including the Khoisan, Xhosa and Sotho speaking people, settler cuisine originated from the people of Afrikaner and British descent, the cuisine of the Cape Malay folks (those who settled from Indonesia and Malaysia. There is also the cuisine of people of Indian descent (motivated by Indian cuisine). Also, South African cuisine has taken influences from that of nearby countries, and this can most clearly evident in some dishes that hold traces of Portuguese culinary - Angola and Mozambique both have been former Portuguese colonies.

A few popular South African delicacies include:

- Biltong - dried, salty meat (chicken, beef or even ostrich), akin to jerky.

- Bobotie - Bobotie is a Cape Malay dish that is similar to meatloaf with raisins, and with a baked egg on top. The dish is served with different accompaniments like sambals, yellow rice, banana slices, coconut and chutney.

- Frikkadel - Meatballs with bread, eggs, onions and spices.

- Mealie bread - Sweet bread baked with sweetcorn.

- Potjiekos - Stew containing meat, vegetables, rice or potato, with water or wine added. Fruits or pasta are sometimes added.

- Sosatie - A Cape Malay dish consisting of mutton marinated with onions, chillies, garlic, curry leaves and tamarind sauce, placed on skewers and later grilled or fried.

- Tomato bredie (Afrikaans: Tamatiebredie) - Mutton stew, seasoned with cardamom, chillies, cloves, cinnamon and ginger.

- Waterblommetjiebredie - Meat stewed with Cape Pondweed flowers.

- Vetkoek - Dough, filled with minced or ground meat, mixed with honey and syrup, and later deep-fried.

- Malva Pudding - An apricot-flavored sponge-like dessert.

- Melktert - Melktert is Afrikaans for "milk tart". This dessert has a pastry crust possessing a rich filling made from flour, milk, sugar and eggs. Cinnamon is at times scattered on top.
