More and more of us are traveling the world more frequently and traveling to more of the worlds far flung destinations, the world truly is a smaller place than it was twenty five years ago. As well as it being easier to get to many of the worlds more exotic destinations some of the countries that had been out of bounds and inaccessible to travels for many years have also opened their borders to tourists and travelers alike. This being the case we now have more opportunities to get to these destinations and enjoy what in many cases is a totally unspoilt country with people who welcome visitors into their lives with open arms. So what is the best way to see these countries and get a flavor of what the country is really like?
Some people are content having a beach holiday and staying in a single resort for the duration of their vacation but for many people this is not what they want when they visit a new country. For these people holiday companies all over the world will cater for their needs, and they will have a very nice vacation in a very nice country on the whole.
Some people have the bug to explore a country and take in the real spirit of the people and the destination, for these people staying in one location and sitting by the pool is not an option. If you are one of these people then why not look at taking a cycling holiday to another country? In many countries the roads are more than adequate for cycling on and in many cases these countries are more cyclist friendly than we are at home as there is less traffic on the roads. As long as you are up for an adventure and be prepared to get lost once or twice there are very few better ways to see a country and meet new people.
People are usually very friendly towards travelers in their country, even more so possibly to travelers on a cycling holiday as they always think you a little quirky and possibly eccentric for holidaying as you are. They may be correct but the overall effect is that you will be warmly greeted in most places that you visit.
Before you travel to any country to have a cycling holiday it is always wise to do a fair amount of homework on the areas that you will be visiting. By creating a very rough itinerary of your trip you should be able to plan where you will be on any given day as well as ensuring that when it comes to the time that you have to fly home you are not three hundred kilometers away from the airport! It is also a wise idea to leave a rough plan of your itinerary at home with a friend or a family member in case of an emergency so they can contact you.
Depending on your spirit of adventure you can either choose to stay in a hotel every night or camp out every night. If the opportunity arises you can do a mixture of both. If you have never taken part in any of the cycling tours that are available to tourists before it may be an idea for the first time at least to stay in a hotel each night. This will get you a better night sleep and help you prepare more readily for the following days ride.
Some countries lend themselves to being explored more than others, these are generally the countries that would make sense to explore on one of your first cycling holidays as these places are also more aware of the needs of the cyclist. One of the more exciting countries to explore on a bike is Iceland, with its very low population, low pollution levels, low crime rate, friendly natives and miles upon miles of road to explore, for many people this is the ideal place to start to explore the world on the bicycle.
So this year if you are looking to see the world but your idea of seeing the world does not include sitting on a beach or hitch hiking around a foreign country, why not plan yourself a cycling holiday and see the world on two wheels?
